In industry, machining, and engineering projects, finishing is not just a matter of aesthetics – it determines the quality, durability, and dimensional accuracy of the product. In this guide, we will review the three main tools for achieving a perfect surface finish: emery cloth, wet & dry sandpaper, and the final stage – diamond pastes. 1. Emery Cloth: The Workhorse of the Metal Industry Emery cloth consists of aluminum oxide abrasive grains glued onto a strong, flexible cloth backing. Ideal Use: Removing heavy rust, cleaning pipes, polishing steels, and preparing surfaces for welding or bonding. Key Advantage: Unlike paper, the cloth is very tear-resistant. It can be folded and wrapped around round parts and remains intact. When to Use? In the initial stages of work, when a large amount of material needs to be removed. 2. Wet & Dry Sandpaper: The Expert in Fine Finishing Wet & dry sandpaper is based on silicon carbide abrasive grains glued onto flexible, water-resistant paper. Ideal Use: Car bodywork, plastic polishing, mold processing, and polishing non-ferrous metals. Why Wet? Water washes away debris, prevents the paper from clogging, and keeps the surface temperature low. Pro Tip: From P400 grit and above, it is always recommended to work wet for a truly smooth result. 3. Understanding Grit Grades It is important to know that above 400 grit, there are significant differences between the European (P) and American (ANSI) standards. Polishing Level European Standard (P) Common Application Very Coarse P60 - P80 Rust and paint removal Medium P120 - P220 Initial smoothing and preparation for primer Fine P400 - P600 Scratch removal and preparation for polish Super Fine P800 - P2500 Polishing and finishing before diamond paste 4. Diamond Compounds: The Highest Grade Diamond compounds are designed for final polishing of extremely hard materials to achieve a mirror finish. Green (10-15 micron): Initial polishing to remove wet & dry sandpaper scratches. Yellow (5-7 micron): Fine polishing for a very smooth surface. White / Blue (1-3 micron): Final polish to achieve a Mirror Finish. 5. The Path to a Perfect Surface Finish: Tips for Correct Work Cross-Hatch Method: Change the polishing direction by 90 degrees when transitioning between grit grades. Prevent Cross-Contamination: Never use the same polishing cloth for two different compounds. Thorough Cleaning: Clean with alcohol between each stage to prevent residual scratches. Need more advice?
